The Ultimate Ring Sizing Guide for South Africa: Order Online with Confidence

Why Ring Sizing Matters More for Online Orders

When you buy in a jewellery store, the jeweller measures your finger and adjusts. Online, you're responsible for knowing your size — and with an engagement ring, getting it wrong isn't just inconvenient, it's potentially a proposal-day disaster. This guide gives you every reliable method for measuring your ring size from home, explains South Africa's sizing standards, and tells you what to do when you're between sizes.

South African Ring Size Standards

South Africa uses the British/Australian alphabetical sizing system — ring sizes are expressed as letters (e.g., J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R) with half sizes also available (e.g., J½, K½). This differs from the US numerical system (1–15) and the European millimetre system.

Most South African jewellers, including Heritage & Co., use this system. When purchasing from international sites, you may need to convert — always check which system a seller uses before ordering.

South African Size Conversion Chart

SA/UK Size US Size EU Size Inner Diameter (mm)
H 47 14.9mm
J 49 15.7mm
K 50½ 16.1mm
L 51½ 16.5mm
M 52½ 16.9mm
N 54 17.3mm
O 55 17.8mm
P 56½ 18.2mm
Q 57½ 18.6mm
R 59 19.0mm
S 60 19.4mm
T 61 19.8mm

The most common women's engagement ring sizes in South Africa are L to P, with M and N being the most frequent. If you have absolutely no reference point, N is the statistical safest guess — but please don't rely on guesses for an engagement ring.

Method 1: The String or Paper Strip Method

This is the most accessible home measurement method and is accurate enough for ordering if done carefully.

What you need: A thin strip of paper or a piece of string, a ruler, a pen.

Steps:

  1. Wrap the paper strip or string snugly (but not tightly) around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on.
  2. Mark where the strip overlaps itself.
  3. Measure the length from the start to the mark in millimetres — this is your finger circumference.
  4. Use the table below to convert circumference to ring size.

Circumference to Ring Size (SA/UK)

Circumference (mm) SA/UK Size
46.8mm H
49.3mm J
50.6mm K
51.9mm L
53.1mm M
54.4mm N
55.7mm O
57.0mm P
58.3mm Q
59.5mm R
60.8mm S
62.1mm T

Method 2: Measure a Ring She Already Wears

If your partner already wears a ring on the same finger (or a ring they wear regularly on any finger of the same hand), this is often the most reliable measurement approach for a surprise proposal.

Place the ring flat on a piece of paper and trace the inner circle. Measure the diameter of that circle in millimetres. Use the conversion table (inner diameter column) above to find the size.

Important: Make sure the ring is worn on the same finger of the same hand. The ring finger on the right hand is often slightly different from the left — and fingers on dominant hands can be marginally larger. In South Africa, the engagement ring is traditionally worn on the left ring finger.

Method 3: Order a Ring Sizer

A ring sizer is a set of graduated metal or plastic rings you try on to find your exact size. It's the most accurate home method and removes all measurement guesswork. Heritage & Co. sells a ring sizer for R299 — it's a small investment that eliminates the biggest risk of online ring ordering.

If you're planning a proposal but want to keep it a surprise, ring sizers can be discreetly ordered and used without your partner knowing (leave it in the bathroom, let curiosity do the work).

Important Sizing Considerations

Time of day: Fingers swell slightly throughout the day and are smallest in the morning when cold. Measure in the afternoon, at a comfortable room temperature, for the most accurate result. Avoid measuring after exercise, after a salty meal, or when very cold.

Temperature matters in South Africa: In summer, particularly in hot humid regions (Durban, Mpumalanga), fingers can be up to one size larger than in winter. If you're between sizes, consider which season the ring will be worn in most often. Many people resize after the proposal anyway.

Knuckle clearance: If your partner has a larger knuckle relative to the base of their finger, size up and have the ring sized down at the base once delivered — this is a standard jeweller service.

Band width matters: Wider bands (6mm+) feel tighter than narrow bands at the same size. If your ring has a wide band, you may need to go half a size up from your measured size.

When You're Between Sizes: What to Do

If your measurement falls between two sizes, here are the rules:

  • For a ring without significant width (under 4mm): size down — a slightly snug fit is better than a loose one.
  • For a ring with moderate width (4–6mm): take the larger size.
  • For a wide band (6mm+): take the larger size and plan for a possible adjustment.
  • When in doubt: take the larger size. A ring that can slide on but doesn't fall off is safer than one that won't fit over the knuckle on the day of the proposal.

What Happens If You Order the Wrong Size?

Heritage & Co. offers a resizing service on all our rings. Most ring styles can be resized up or down by 1–2 sizes without affecting the structure of the ring. Heavily pavé-set bands or eternity rings have more limited resize range — we'll advise specifically if your ring falls into this category.

The Heritage & Co. Approach to Sizing

We include a professional ring sizer in every order confirmation so you can confirm the size before the ring is finalised. For made-to-order rings, we build in a two-week window for you to confirm sizing before production begins — removing the pressure entirely.
